Arezzo, one of the oldest towns in Italia, boasts important cultural and artistic traditions. Jewellery making dates back to the Etruscans who were able goldsmiths. They used the refined technique of granulation which consisted in transforming the gold into tiny grains which were then soldered onto a gold surface.
Great artists have left their mark in Arezzo: Pier della Francesca, Guido Monaco, Petrarca, Masaccio, Signorelli, Michelangelo and Vasari. The Aretine area has deep historical origins from the Etruscan Civilization, to the Roman Empire and then the Gran Duchy of the Medici. The old part of the city still retains its medieval appearance and numerous signs of the different cultural periods can be seen throughout the town such as the Roman Amphitheatre, Petrarca's house, the Cathedral, the Pieve di Santa Maria and the Church of San Domenico with the crocifix by Cimabue.
